During our July event at Rockwell’s/REPUBLIC, we teamed up with the folks from Glass Cage Productions to create a video that showcase what it is we do each month.
In the video, you’ll hear from each of the ladies that are a part of the Social Charity Club board, as well as a spokesperson from Safe Haven Ministries, and an enthusiastic patron of our our monthly events.

Out with a Bang!
SCC went out with a bang in 2012! Our last event took place at The Holiday Bar. Located on the Westside of Grand Rapids, Holiday provided an intimate and inviting space for all who attended in support of Family Hope Foundation.
A festive atmosphere was present the entire evening and the door never stopped swinging as more people came to the party. The appetizer spread was amazing and not enough good things can be said about the staff of the Holiday Bar. At the end of the night a total of $2,601 was raised for the Family Hope Foundation of Grand Rapids! The money from the event will go towards the Family Hope Foundation’s Therapy Scholarship Program; a program that helps families access life changing therapy for their child with special needs. “What a great night! Family Hope Foundation would like to thank the Grand Rapids Social Charity Club, the Holiday Bar and the generous community we live in,” says Jane Eppard, Vice Chair and Founding Board Member.
Here are some great shots of our December event:
SCC is ready to kick off 2013 with a nostalgic journey to the days of “speakeasy” pubs and vintage charm. On Thursday, January 10th we will host out first event of the year at the popular Speak EZ Lounge located in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. What better non-profit to partner with at this swanky, innovative venue than Actors’ Theatre? In operation since 1980 as a non-profit organization, Actors’ Theatre focuses on showcasing the talents of local actors and serves as a training resource for theatre students in West Michigan.
As always, 100% of the profits raised will benefit Actors’ Theatre. The cost of entry is just $10.00 and in turn you will receive a complimentary drink ticket. For more information and to RSVP please visit our Facebook invitation (https://www.facebook.com/events/469372259794205/) and help us spread the word by sharing the event within your own social circles. Help us step up by stepping out for the Actors’ Theatre! See you Thursday!
We had a great time at our last Social Charity Event in July at Rockwell/Republic benefiting Degage Ministries. The weather was beautiful and everyone had a blast. With your help we raised $1,284 for Degage!
Degage did something amazing for us too, they took that number and showed us exactly how these dollars would assist them.
Joy Petroelje, Development Director at Degage, shared with us the following information:
“With $1,284 raised, these funds have a significant impact on the tangible services we provide for our homeless and low-income patrons. $1,284 provides any of the following:
-29 women the opportunity to stay in our Open Door Drop-In Center for 3 nights each
-a State of Michigan ID for 130 people seeking to obtain legal identification
-52 visits to the dentist or pairs of eyeglasses
-5,356 showers and 3,094 loads of laundry
-867 bus passes for those traveling to work or medical appointments.”
This is what Social Charity Club is all about. Yes, it’s a great way to network and enjoy an evening with friends, but when it boils down to it, we want to help those who are trying to make a difference in Grand Rapids. The more people who attend our events, the more the charity will benefit. The testimonial sent by Joy warmed our hearts and made us want to jump up and down yelling “YESSSSSS!” (I think a few of us did) That is why we started this organization and hopefully why people choose to attend our events; we are all working toward the same goal and want to help make the city we live in fantastic.
The Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition is a bicycling advocacy organization that is helping change Grand Rapids into a safe bicycling community, while promoting the benefits of cycling for health, recreation, and the environment. Its goal is to provide a more bicycle-friendly community and safe riding conditions to all user groups. GGRBC offers solutions, resources, and counsel to those who seek to improve the cycling environment of Grand Rapids.
*Bicycle racks will be put up in the BOB parking lot for our bicyclists!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our June event at the JW Marriot. With your help we raised $1,450 for the Friends of Grand Rapids Parks!
Steve Farber, Executive Director of the non-profit, had this to say about the evening:
“Thanks to the Social Charity Club of Grand Rapids benefit, the Friends of Grand Rapids Parks was not only able to raise funds, we were also able to raise awareness in the community about our mission to protect, enhance and expand parks and public space. It was a great way to connect with old friends and make new friends in the area.”
Many thanks to the team at JW Marriot for providing us with such a beautiful venue to enjoy a pleasant evening with friends.
Please join us on July 12th at Rockwell/Republic for our next event benefiting Degage Ministries. For more information and to rsvp click here.
Thanks to everyone who came out last Thursday to make the Social Charity Club One Year Anniversary a night to remember! There was so much buzz surrounding our bash we could barely contain ourselves the night before. Both the generosity of our host, The Grand Woods Lounge, and the outstanding support shown to us by Grand Rapids helped SCC raise $5,750 for The Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. That is over three times more than our last event! Both Lauren LaTarte and Marjorie Behm commented on the generosity and flexibility the Woods provided our organization. “The Woods was so generous by matching our contribution, it was a pleasure to work with them. This place was our first venue and supportive from day one, we were very excited to come full circle with them.”
“The best part was seeing everyone have a great time,” says Marjorie. “Our events are designed to be fun, laid back, and enjoyable for everyone, this was definitely apparent during our anniversary event.” The Woods was packed from beginning to end as people networked, laughed, and bonded while supporting a much valued resource for children statewide. “The children and families receiving care at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital will greatly benefit from SCC’s philanthropic support,” wrote Alyson Dondzila, Development Coordinator of Spectrum Health Foundation. “Whitney Budden was my main contact through SCC and I found her to be very enthusiastic and organized. She kept our guest hosts’ motivated with news and details about the event. The genuine dedication of these girls to non-profit sustainability in the Grand Rapids community is evident.”
As our guests were enjoying the outdoor patio they listened to great music provided by Drew Behringer and Nine Mile Smile. This progressed into dancing and singing along to some memorable, fun classics. “Nine Mile Smile loved stepping out to support both the SCC and The Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Not only did we have a great time, but we love being involved in a cause that makes a dramatically positive difference in our community,” says Jordan Carson, lead singer of Nine Mile Smile.
The event itself only bolstered our resolve to make this organization even better over the next year. “People mainly mentioned that they were proud of how far we’ve come. They also inquired about future events and how they can help out more. We have hit a very positive momentum and plan to move forward from here,” says Marjorie.
We appreciate the efforts of everyone involved: The Woods, Helen DeVos, all of our fabulous guest hosts, the musicians, and those venues that donated gift cards for our raffle. “It’s always humbling to see so many supporters step up,” says Jordan. “We are so fortunate in Grand Rapids to have a local organization for the community to follow like the SCC. The organization is bringing together local charities, businesses, and members of the community to better our city.”
Stay tuned for more information regarding the next venue and charity for our June event. It’s going to be fabulous!
